Road map to push tourism in big way

Our Bureau

There will be more focussed marketing outside the country at the travel marts.

Chennai , Sept. 30

THE Tamil Nadu Tourism Department has chalked out a road map to pull in more tourists into the State. Though last on the tourism bandwagon, the State is rich in heritage and natural beauty and moves are on to have all this packaged and marketed in a more focussed manner, sources said.

The marketing would start at the forthcoming Skal Congress to be held here in October, which would be utilised to the maximum. The foreign delegates who will be coming for this Congress are either from the hotel, travel or airline industry and they would be given an insight into what the State can offer.

There will also be more focussed marketing outside the country at the travel marts. The first of these will be the World Travel Mart in London, followed by the Incredible India mart in Malaysia in which the Tamil Nadu Government will be participating in a big way. In addition, there will also be a presence at the ITB in Berlin in March, next year.

The focus would be on getting travel writers, travel agents, tour operators and hoteliers to come and visit the State.

On the domestic side there will also be road shows in six cities in India. The rail and road package, which is being marketed at present, is doing well, sources said.

Branding and positioning the State would start with the campaign in October to coincide with the tourist season. One of the themes of the campaign would be highlighting the little known places in Tamil Nadu. Branded as the "Hidden Treasures", the State has a number of destinations like Pichavaram, which have not been visited by many. There are also plans to promote Chennai and Coimbatore as convention centres, sources said.
