Exports from Tirupur to US surge

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Sept. 30

The premier knitwear town of Tirupur has pulled off a big punch in its exports to the coveted US market with a whopping 74 per cent rise in exports to America in 2002 calendar.

And, the surge in Tirupur's share in total US exports from India has continued through January-August 2003. The January-August 2003 period has seen exports from Tirupur region to the US destination spurting by another 35 per cent.

The escalation in the pace of knitwear shipment from Tirupur between 2001 and 2002 periods has led to this southern hosiery town humbling the Delhi region which had so far stood the ground as the leading knitwear exporting region among the four regions, thanks to the greater access to the quota-controlled administration.

The percentage share (volume term) of the Delhi's knitwear exports of the total knitwear shipments from India, which used to be either on par with or ruled over the share of Tirupur's, slid to 30 per cent in 2002 from 34 per cent in the previous year. Against the total knitwear shipments of 1,417 lakh pieces from India in 2002, Delhi's share at a quantity of 437 lakh pieces fell to 30.8 per cent from 34 per cent it held in 2001, though its volume of shipment that year was only 380 lakh pieces.

Against this, Tirupur's shipment in 2002 to the US had surged to 454 lakh pieces from its shipment in 2001 of 261 lakh pieces. This surge in its US shipment has also enabled Tirupur crossing for the first time the 30 per cent market share in US shipments from India so far held by the Delhi region and touch the 32 per cent share in total shipments made that year from India.

With the pace of the knitwear exports to the US market continues to remain firm during the current calendar, the Tirupur shipments during January-August 2003 is already up by 35 per cent at 397 lakh pieces against 293 lakh pieces exported for the corresponding period last year.

Tirupur's exports to the US during 2002 calendar fetched a 15 per cent rise and its exports during January-August 2003 period is up by 12 per cent . Against this, the value of shipments from the Delhi region to US in 2002 calendar fell by 6.5 per cent. .
