THE Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh, on Tuesday asked the Gujarat Government to develop Surat as an international centre for trading, manufacturing and industrial activities.
Addressing an international conference organised by CII, Mr Singh said that the Centre would extend full support for the efforts taken by the State Government in the creation of such a centre here.
Reacting to the Gujarat Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi's statement that MoUs worth Rs 55,000 crore have been signed by entrepreneurs with the State Government over the last five days, Mr Singh asked other State governments to take a leaf from Gujarat book and try to accelerate investments into their States.
Mr Singh said that efforts should be taken to export value-added textiles instead of nearly exporting cotton yarn from Surat. He pointed out that 30 per cent of the world's cotton yarn originated from here.
In his address, Mr Narendra Modi said that the State had received a lot of proposals in the area of education. He highlighted that the London School of Economics would be establishing a branch in the State. An MoU was signed between the Airport Authority of India and Gujarat Government for the development of Surat Airport.
