Telecommunications ITI in pact with ZTE for CDMA technology Our Bureau
Bangalore , Sept. 30
INDIAN Telephone Industries (ITI) has signed a technology transfer agreement with ZTE of China for making CDMA (code division multiple access) equipment. Addressing shareholders at the 53rd annual general meeting, ITI's Chairman and Managing Director, Mr V.K. Pandey, said here that a similar arrangement was also in the process for GSM equipment. These initiatives were being taken to take advantage of the phenomenal growth in the mobile communications sector. Mr Pandey also said that the company was still examining the viability of making GSM handsets. This was in addition to the planned production of GSM/CDMA switches. ITI planned to set up an exclusive production line for export of electronic equipment to ensure the consistent revenue streams. ITI, he said, also planned to focus on revenue sharing in networking projects, production of next generation of Internet Protocol switches and C/DWDM (coarse/dense wave division multiplexing). He said that with a view to build a long-term relationship with the company's important customer Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, a strategic alliance was being initiated for setting up a V-Sat network for voice and data services. Besides, ITI has successfully completed Phase I of BSNL's GSM network. In addition, the company has also completed a managed lease line network for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd and CIVICON satellite network for the Ministry of Home Affairs Besides, Mr Pandey said that ITI had also drawn up a plan for the Tenth Plan period , after taking into account the present changes in the telecom markets and technology forecasts. The blueprint included increasing the efficiency, profitability of operations, optimisation and rationalisation of resources.
