`Samaj' launches edition in Vizag

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 30

MANY parts of Orissa and coastal Andhra Pradesh, both of which were in the erstwhile Madras presidency, share a common ethos and cultural heritage and therefore both States should strive together to better the lot of people and promote their culture and languages, the Chief Minister of Orissa, Mr Naveen Patnaik, has said.

He was speaking at the launch of the Vizag edition of the premier Oriya daily, Samaj. He said the Vizag edition would cater to the needs of Oriya-speaking people in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam besides southern Orissa. Many people were bi-lingual in the border districts of the States and the paper would be of great use to them.

The Information and Public Relations Minister of Orissa, Dr Damodar Rout, said that the daily was popular in many parts of Orissa, especially the rural areas. It was founded by Pundit Gopabandhu Das, disciple of Lala Lajpat Rai, in 1919 and was being run by Lok Sevak Sangh (Servants of People Society) founded by Lala Lajpat Rai. He said the daily with a circulation of 2.5 lakh was not a commercial newspaper and the profits were used for the benefit of the rural poor in Orissa.

Mr B.K. Panda, Chairman and Managing Director of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, said the Samaj commanded the same respect in Orissa as The Hindu did in South India.

The Mayor of Visakhapatnam, Ms Rajana Ramani, said that in all the municipal schools of Vizag, Oriya had been introduced as a medium of instruction in view of the large number of people from the State living in the city.

The AP Minister of Information and Public Relations, Mr S. Chandra Mohan Reddy, said it was a good development that the premier Oriya daily had launched its edition in Vizag.

Prof. Manorama Mahapatra, Editor of the paper, said the paper had two editions till now, one in Cuttack and the other in Sambalpur, and the third one in Vizag would expand its reach significantly. Another edition is being planned in Kolkata.
