Bangalore , Oct.1

THE Federation of Indian Publishers (FIP), the apex body of book publishing companies, today announced that the forthcoming Frankfurt Book Fair, to be held from October 8-13 at Germany, will see the largest number of participants ever from the Rs 2,000-crore strong Indian publishing industry.

The Federation also announced that it would be taking up certain issues plaguing the industry with the international community.

Mr Anand Bhushan, President, FIP, whose members make up 90 per cent of all the publishing houses participating at the fair, said: "We appeal to the international community to extend a helping hand in curbing the menace of book piracy from neighbouring countries. The FIP is also taking up at the fair major issues such as freedom to publish, respecting copyrights, among others that are proving a hindrance for the growth of the industry."

"The Federation will also organise seven exhibitions across the world, including Malaysia, South Africa, and Mauritius, this year to create an awareness on Indian works. We expect exports to rise to Rs 1,000 crore within the next three years," Mr Bhushan added.

Indian book exports have grown from a mere Rs 20 crore to Rs 300 crore over the last 20 years. The industry currently brings out around 70, 000 books every year making it the seventh largest producer in the world, and the third largest in English language after the US and the UK.

The FIP is the representative body of publishers in English, Hindi and other regional languages with its membership from all over India. All the leading publishers of the country are its direct members, other publishers being represented through various local associations.
