AP to probe admissions to pvt medical courses

Hyderabad , Oct. 6

AMIDST allegations of irregularities in the medical and dental admissions, the State Government has decided to "investigate" the entire admission process, particularly with regard to the `B' category admissions.

Addressing a news conference after over-viewing the admission process at a high-level meeting here on Monday, Mr Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, the State Minister for Health, said the Government has asked the managements of private colleges to submit the complete lists of admissions. "We will investigate to find out whether there are any irregularities. We will take the erring colleges to task," he said.

The `B' category allows private colleges to allot 25 per cent of their seats at Rs 2 lakh, yet following the EAMCET (Engineering and Medical Common Entrance Test) ranking and other requirements. Of late, there have been allegations from different segments, saying that the private managements have abused this category, throwing all the rules to the wind.

The Minister said there were three kinds of allegations with regard to the category. "It is alleged that merit was not considered, reservation requirements were violated and huge amounts were collected over and above the prescribed amount," he said.

The managements have been seeking the nod to convert the unfilled `B' category seats to `C' category, which gives them a free hand when it comes to collecting fee. "But we are against it," he said.

Meanwhile, the Government has decided to move the Supreme Court, seeking a week's time to conduct "extended counselling" so as to complete the admission process. "We are taking legal opinion in this regard," the Minister said.
