Global pepper exports decline 17 per cent

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Oct. 6

GLOBAL pepper export declined by 17 per cent during August to 17,181 tonne as compared to 20,677 tonne exported during August last year. This is primarily because of a fall in exports from all major pepper-producing countries except India.

According to International Pepper Community (IPC), India is reported to have exported around 1,400 tonne in August 2003 against 1,100 tonne in August 2002, up by 300 tonne.

During the January-August 2003 period, pepper exports declined by six per cent to 1,30,000 tonne as compared to 1,38,206 tonne exported in the year ago period. All producing countries reported a fall in exports except Brazil.

During August 2003 Indonesia exported 5,670 tonne of pepper (4,492 tonne of black and 1,179 tonne of white). During January - August 2003, exports stood at 26,097 tonne, lower by five per cent than the year-ago period (27,589 tonne).

Brazil exported 2,262 tonne of pepper during August 22,003 (2,361 tonne). Total export during January - August 2003 increased by 29 per cent to 17,702 tonne (13,735 tonne).
