Blackout in parts of Maharashtra

Our Bureau

Although supplies to eastern districts of Maharashtra remained unaffected, power supply to Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara, parts of Pune, Thane and Raigad districts collapsed.

Mumbai , Oct. 6

PARTS of Western Maharashtra were plunged into darkness for more than eight hours after a technical snag caused the State power grid to collapse on Monday.

The MSEB Chairman, Mr Asoke Basak, has ordered an enquiry into the power failure, which affected more than six districts except Mumbai. The enquiry is to be completed within seven days.

A snag at Maharashtra State Electricity Board's 400-kV transmission line between Padgha and Kalwa receiving station caused the system collapse at about 10.39 a.m. on Monday morning. Although supplies to eastern districts of Maharashtra remained unaffected, power supply to Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara, parts of Pune, Thane and Raigad districts collapsed. Also, water supplies to parts of Mumbai and to Railways was affected for sometime, an MSEB news release said.

Although 70 per cent power supplies were restored by 2 p.m., supplies were not fully normal till 6 p.m. on Monday evening.

"The Western power grid had to intervene to safeguard the systems from collapsing entirely and averting a blackout in the entire western region," Mr Anjan Roy, Head (Western Region), Power Grid Corporation of India, said when contacted.

Mumbai remained mostly untouched by the power outage after its islanding system was activated at 11.25 a.m. This however, added to the power shortage in the rest of the State as the surplus power bought from Tata Power was not available to MSEB.

The islanding system disconnects Tata Power's systems from the grid and power supply from TPC stations is diverted to the city in case of a possible grid collapse. The system had to be activated four times in the last two years, a TPC release said.

Within the Mumbai power supply systems, parts where BSES supplies power were also forced into darkness on Monday. A BSES spokesperson accused non-supply from Tata Power in a release issued here.
