TV channels heading for Cannes — Scout for programming content

New Delhi , Oct. 6

CANNES is not just about films or advertising. The Indian television industry is also heading for the French beach resort later in the week, in a bid to pump up its programming inventory.

Channels and entertainment software houses are hoping to strike deals and make their presence felt in the international scene during the forthcoming media fair MIPCOM - an international market for television, video, cable and satellite.

So officials from Star, UTV and almost all the major channels are sending out programming teams to scout for new formats and shows. According to a spokesperson for Star India, "Being the No 1 broadcaster, we are setting up a stall and also trying to sell our programmes to other smaller networks, besides looking around for new programmes."

Last year, the company managed to sell saas-bahu soaps such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhie Bahu Thi and other shows to networks in East Europe, Indonesia and West Asia.

UTV has said that it would try and sell two of its co-production programmes, try and forge co-productions in non-fiction programming, with some UK and European producers\ broadcasters as well as hold discussions for partners for their up coming KIDS channel in South

Asia. It would also like to acquire programming and syndicate kids shows and negotiate formats in fiction and drama with broadcasters in Italy, Spain and South America.

Last year, the fair had about 10,272 participants including 2,712 buyers from about 90 countries. Mr Ajay Patadia, President Corporate Affairs and Company Secretary, Balaji Telefilms, said, "Though we will not be present this year, we get a lot of leads here. Balaji Telefilms will, however, participate in all other forthcoming international fairs."

And it will not just be the Indian companies looking for opportunities. Most of the international television channels and entertainment software production houses will be hawking their wares and looking out for good bargains.
