Ms Naina Lal Kidwai

Mumbai/Bangalore , Oct. 6

MS VIDYA Manohar Chhabria, Chairperson of the $2-billion Jumbo Group, and Ms Naina Lal Kidwai, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, HSBC Securities and Capital Markets (India) Pvt Ltd, are the two women from India to figure in the list of top-50 most powerful women in international business by Fortune magazine.

While Ms Chhabria has been ranked 38, moving up six notches from last year, Ms Kidwai, who featured for the fourth consecutive time figures 47 in the annual ranking list of the latest issue of Fortune magazine, which hit the stands today.

"The International Power 50 is composed of women who have an operating role in profit businesses outside the US (including women based in the US who run overseas divisions)," the magazine said.

Speaking to Business Line, said Ms Kidwai, "I feel very disappointed to see that every year only two Indian/South Asian women figure in the list. More women in India deserve to be recognised but there seems to be a lack of awareness.''

Asked what her advice would be to other aspirants to touch global benchmarks, she said, "Hard work and passion can get you anything; you just have to put your mind to it. Initially, it is also important to get oneself fully qualified, so go out and get yourself well-qualified.''

The first Indian woman to graduate from Harvard Business School in 1982, Ms Kidwai joined HSBC in August 2002. Ms Kidwai made her name at Morgan Stanley in New Delhi, which she joined in 1994 after a stint at ANZ Grindlay's Bank.

Ms Chhabria heads the Jumbo Group which is an international industrial and trading conglomerate comprising 28 companies and 20,000 employees in over 25 countries around the globe.
