Events CII online journal to offer freight rates Our Bureau
Chennai , Oct. 7 THE Confederation of Indian Industry will launch an online journal offering freight rates and news service. An initiative of the CII Institute of Logistics, the online journal www.ciilogistics.com will be launched at Logistics 2003. This is the fourth edition of the biennial event organised by CII on logistics and supply chain management (SCM), to be held here from October 8 to 12. The online journal will also provide container freight rates on five select shipping routes from three container ports in South India. There will also be news/information about traffic volume and movement from these centres, Mr N. Kumar, Chairman, CII National Council on Logistics, told presspersons here on Tuesday. The service will cover all other ports next year. The CII also hopes to provide similar information on air traffic. The portal would disseminate information to build knowledge on SCM and logistics. It would also have case studies, articles, presentation, analysis and interviews with CEOs and CLOs (chief logistics officers), he said. Logistics 2003, spread over five days, includes a four-day exhibition and a two-day logistics summit. The summit will feature a CEO's interactive session on impact of VAT (value added tax) on logistics. A seminar by Singapore Cluster value-added logistics mission to India would also form part of the event, he said. According to Mr Kumar, through Logistics 2003, the CII would like to develop the industry in India, define and develop standards for logistics and champion the concept of outsourcing of logistics activities amongst corporate houses. The CII would also like to showcase solutions and services available in logistics and SCM in the country. The exhibition would showcase services, equipment, products and solutions in logistics, SCM, transportation, material handling, storage, warehousing and information technology. About 475 participants, mostly logistics professionals, would attend the summit while around 10,000 visitors are expected to visit the exhibition, entry to which would be only by invitation. According to Mr Kumar, a white paper, prepared by Prof G. Raghuram of IIM, Ahmedabad, and Prof Janat Shah, IIM, Bangalore, would be released at the event. Titled `Roadmap for logistics excellence: Need to break the unholy equilibrium", the paper would provide a roadmap for India to move towards logistics excellence. There would also be a theme paper by Prof N. Viswanadham, Deputy Executive Director, The Logistics Institute, Asia Pacific, Singapore. The theme paper would address issues such as the state of the logistics industry in India, international benchmarking, emerging logistics trends and opportunities, opportunities for innovative logistics services in India, and the development strategy for Indian logistics through a cluster approach. Some of the exhibitors include APL Logistics (India), Maersk Logistics, Air India, Bar Code India, Council of Logistics, AFL Cargo, Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority Junghernrich AG, Germany and Smart Inc. Speakers at Logistics 2003 summit include Mr Jimmy Khoo and Mr K.B. Nagaraju from HP Asia Pacific and HP India, Mr Lim Ghee Ann, General Manager, Logistics and SCM, Sony Corporation, China, Mr J. Miebach, Chairman, Miebach Logistics, Mr Vivek Kamra, Chief, Customer Service Division, Tata Steel, and Mr Joseph Saldhana, Manager, PLCD, Toyota Kirloskar Motor.
