Kerala constitutes biotech board

THE State Government has constituted a biotechnology board to guide and co-ordinate the action among various Government departments on biotechnology applications.

The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, is the Chairman of the board and Dr M.S. Valiathan, Executive Vice-President of the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) is the Convenor. The first meeting of the board is scheduled to be held in the last week of October.

Apart from the ministers of stake holding departments such as industry, health and agriculture, the Planning Board Vice-Chairman, Mr V. Ramachandran, and the Chief Secretary, Mr N. Chandrasekharan Nair form part of the board.

A core group of experts under Dr Valiathan have been formed. The members included Mr Raj Kumar, Managing Director, Sree Sakthi Paper Mills Ltd, Kochi, Mr M. Vijayan, Director, Indian Institute of Science, Prof K.P. Gopinathan, IISc, Mr Rajeev Vasudevan, Special Officer, Biotechnology Mission, and Mr K.K. Narayanan, Managing Director Metahelix Life Sciences.
