New Projects Subway to set up shop in Chennai Our Bureau
Chennai , Oct. 7 SUBWAY, said to be the world's largest submarine sandwich and salad restaurant chain, is scheduled to open in Chennai before Deepavali. The restaurant will be located at Spencer Plaza and will be under the direct supervision of the Subway world franchise programme. In Chennai, Ms Somna Sachdev, a first generation entrepreneur who is the franchisee, said that the investment into the venture was around Rs 50 lakh. Ms Sachdev said that the company puts the franchisee through an intensive two-week training programme in US in the art of sandwich making and running the store. The unique selling proposition of the store would be the freshness of the food that is served, she said. There would be five types of bread, like for instance the country wheat bread with oats on it and the hearty Italian bread. Ms Sachdev said that the Indian additions on the menu were the panneer tikka, chicken tikka, and mint mayonnaise. The restaurant will also be introducing a breakfast menu as well as a kids menu. According to a press release, Subway has restaurants in Delhi and Mumbai and this is second one in the South with the first one being in Hyderabad. The restaurant offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian submarine sandwiches and salads catering to the Indian tastes and nutritional requirements. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus will be served not only in separate counters but made in separate microwave ovens. The press release said that the restaurant has to follow extensive and strict hygiene and sanitation standards set by the research development unit of the Subway World Headquarters located in Connecticut in the US. Subway has 20,000 restaurants in 74 countries and is also the second largest food chain having recently surpassed McDonalds in the US and Canada, the release said. Subway enjoys 59 per cent market share in sandwich consumption (excluding burgers).
