Powerloom park planned at Andipatti

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Oct. 7

PREPARATORY works for the establishment of a hi-tech powerloom park is on at Andipatti near here.

According to Mr M.S. Mathivanan, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Weavers' Industries, the project estimated to cost around Rs 150 crore, with the subsidy from Central and State Governments, would have among other things, a computer-aided laboratory, a textile-testing laboratory and a spacious meeting and exhibition hall. About 600 sophisticated looms could be installed.

The Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXIL) would give special training to textile designers and weavers. The PDEXIL, in coordination with the Office of Textile Commissioner, would act as nodal agency for setting up the park.

Priority would be given to the manufacture of yarn-dyed varieties, grey fabrics and home furnishing materials meant for exports.

Mr Nagesh M. Mugadur, Director at the Regional Office of the Textile Commissioner said, Technology Upgradation Fund (TUF) has been modified for the convenience of weavers. As per the new norm the capital subsidy for modernising powerlooms had been raised to 20 per cent from 5 per cent. A 25-per cent subsidy would be given for the group-shelter scheme. The cluster formation of powerlooms would have more advantages, such as bulk raw material procurement and massive production at one place, single procurement by buyers, loan disbursal and power subsidy.
