New site for apparel park near Vizag

AN alternative site for the proposed apparel export park in Visakhapatnam district has been chosen at Gajuwaka, as the site originally allocated for the project at Aganampudi village near here has been offered to Volkswagen company for setting up a car-manufacturing unit.

Mr B.P Acahrya, Secretary, Industries, reviewed the steps for setting up the export park with officials here and on Tuesday the District Collector, Mr Sunil Sharma, visited the alternative site.

M. Acharya said an area of 145.60 acres in the industrial estate at Gajuwaka, block E, and the layout was approved by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority. The project would cost Rs 27.53 crore, with the Union Government contributing Rs 17 crore, the State Government Rs 6.05 crore and the implementing agency, the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, the rest.

The objective was to set up a separate industrial area for export-oriented apparel units. It would give self-employment to 15,000 workers and wage employment to 60,000. It was proposed to produce export goods worth Rs 130 crore after the completion of the park and achieving full occupancy.

The State was currently exporting apparel worth Rs 350 crore per annum and the aim was to increase it to Rs 500 crore by 2005. He said so far Rs 1.22 lakh had been spent on the preliminary works.
