Accidents 20 drowned in boat capsize Our Bureau
Visakhapatnam , Oct. 7 AT least 20 people, including 12 women and three children, were drowned when an overcrowded country boat capsized in the River Krishna near the island village of Gollalmanda in Nagayalanka mandal of Krishna district Tuesday morning. Police said that 20 bodies had been recovered so far, while 21 people swam to safety. The coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam experienced heavy rainfall during the past three days due to the depression in the Bay of Bengal, which crossed the coast at Kalingapatnam in the early hours of Tuesday. Search operations for nine missing persons were hampered due to heavy intermittent showers under the influence of the depression in the Bay of Bengal, the police said. Expert swimmers in the deltaic Diviseema region were assisting in the search operations supervised by the State Ministers, Mr V. Sobhanadreswara Rao, Mr N. Narasimha Rao and Mr K. Vijaya Rama Rao. Mr Vijaya Rama Rao, who is also district in-charge Minister, announced an ex gratia of Rs 50,000 each to the families of the deceased and Rs 55,000 each to the kin of the three deceased students under the `Apadbandu' scheme. Houses would be constructed for the bereaved families under the `Indira Awas Yojana Scheme,' he added. About 50 people were in the boat when it overturned after sailing for half-a-kilometre stretch from the island village. Most of the victims were agricultural labourers, women and school children. The country boat, proceeding from Gollamanda to Gollalanka, was overloaded and was caught in the high tide amidst depression in the Bay. A stampede had reportedly occurred on the boat when the boatmen were collecting money from the passengers, leading to the tragedy. Police said 20 children were proceeding by the boat to Eddurumanda to report to their hostel after Dasara vacation. As many as 27 people had drowned in this region ten years ago in a similar accident. Normal life was disrupted at many places in the coastal region. A woman died in a wall collapse at Ramakrishnanagar here on Monday night. According to a press release issued by the cyclone warning centre here, Sompeta in Srikakulam received the highest rainfall of 17 cm followed by Visakhapatnam 15 cm, and Parvathipuram 13 cm.
