India and Asean

This refers to "A tryst with Asian destiny" (Business Line, October 11). With the end of the Cold War, it has become imperative for the Asian countries, especially India, to enhance their position vis-a-vis the US. The expansion of the Asean will prove to be solution to the uncontrolled hegemonic powers of the US. Thus, it is better for India to look East than to the West to develop economic and defence relations. India's increasing engagement in the Asean region, both in the politico-security and economic spheres, will contribute immensely to the objective of sustaining regional peace and stability.

India should also try to show the same interest in developing trade relations with its own neighbours — the SAARC countries.
