Supply Chain Management Concor to update Raxaul terminal Our Bureau
Kolkata , Oct. 13 ENCOURAGED by the rising trend in the Nepal-bound traffic routed through Kolkata port, the Container Corporation of India (Concor) proposes to upgrade infrastructure at its terminal at Raxaul in north Bihar. "We will soon have a reach stacker and more trailers installed at the Raxaul terminal," according to a spokesman for Concor. Right now the terminal does not have any reach stacker which, it is felt, is urgently needed to facilitate the handling of the containers. The three sling cranes with the limited capacity, it is pointed out, are inadequate to cope with the rising volume of traffic. The number of trailers at the terminal too is being increased from about 20 currently to 45 by the end of this month. Nepal's Birgunge inland containers depot (ICD), located just across the border, has as many as four reach stackers, all virtually lying idle. However, Concor's bid to acquire one of them did not make much headway in view of procedural hurdles. Concor's service between Kolkata Dock System and Raxaul was launched in the middle of August. In the past two months, the total throughput was nearly 500 TEUs - 79 TEUs in four rakes in August, 314 TEUs in seven rakes in September and 106 TEUs in two rakes so far in the current month. "Once the upgraded facilities are in place at Raxaul, we hope to handle 600 TEUs a month on an average", said the spokesman. Concor, the spokesman said , was providing a unique service, total logistics service, for the KDS-Raxaul run. Within the dock, the containers with imports for Nepal are put on the railway flats by the KDS authorities. Concor transports the containers by rail up to Raxaul, unloads them at the terminal there and again transports them by road to Birgunge ICD located in Nepalese territory. On destuffing, the boxes are brought back to Raxaul by road and then to KDS by train to have them delivered to the shipping lines concerned in their respective slots in the KDS.
