Cancun just a speed-breaker

This is with reference to "Cancun is dead, long live WTO" (Business Line, October 15). The Cancun meeting is not an end in itself.

The failure to advance in Cancun should be seen only as a temporary setback.

It is only a speed-breaker which made the developed countries pause and do a rethink over the cause of developing and underdeveloped countries.

It is also an opportunity for the developing and underdeveloped countries to prepare themselves for compromises with the developed countries.

Despite its inherent flaws, the World Trade Organisation is today seen as a sine quo non in the world economy.

Efforts should, therefore, be taken to review the trade talks and make them more balanced.

Having demonstrated their collective strength in Cancun, the developing countries should articulate a positive agenda that will rekindle western interest in the WTO.

C. Ramesh,

Keeramangalam (TN)
