THE Kanara Small Industries Association (KSIA) has said that various policies of the Government, high tariff on power and taxation rates have affected small-scale industries (SSIs) in Karnataka.
In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, KSIA has urged the Government to take action to solve the problems of SSIs. In the memorandum, the KSIA President, Mr K. Jayaraj Pai, said Goa, Daman, and Pondicherry have extended sales tax holiday till 2009. "Industrial units from these areas are dumping their goods in Karnataka, crippling SSIs here," he said.
As high tax rate is encouraging these units to market their products here, there is more trading activity in the State than the production in SSI sector.
Referring to the power scenario, Mr Pai said Daman, Kerala, Pondicherry, and Goa are supplying power at less than Rs 2.80 a unit, whereas it is Rs 4.20 a unit in Karnataka.
He pointed out that Andhra Pradesh and Goa have reduced power tariff for industrial sector, and added that Kerala has decided not to increase power tariff by one year.
