Plea to scrap emigration fee

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, has demanded that the Union Ministry of Labour withdraw with immediate effect its order requiring emigrants to Gulf nations to pay upfront the return economy class airfare.

Most of those leaving the State, noted for its large population of the educated unemployed, and bound for destinations in the Gulf, belonged to the poor and economically backward families, the Chief Minister told the Union Labour Minister, Mr Sahib Singh Verma, in a communication. The new directive on upfront return ticket would only further aggravate the predicament of the Gulf-bound.

According to the Chief Minister, those leaving their homes purely for making a living deserved a more humane treatment. Earlier on Tuesday, the Minister for Non-Resident Keralite Affairs, Mr M.M. Hassan, also had made a similar plea to the Union Labour Minister.
