Bengal postal circle targets Rs 410-cr revenue this fiscal

THE West Bengal Postal Circle of the Department of Posts has targeted a revenue of Rs 410 crore in the current fiscal. In 2002-03, the postal circle generated a revenue of Rs 335 crore.

Stating this during an interface with presspersons at the conclusion of the National Postal Week here on Wednesday, the Chief Post Master General of the West Bengal Postal Circle, Mr S.R. Das, said 35 per cent of the targeted revenue would be generated from postal services while the balance would come from savings bank, financial services and reimbursements pertaining to services veering round savings certificates.

Mr Das said the West Bengal Postal Circle continued to top the country in mobilisation of small savings. In 2002-03, small savings mobilisation amounted to Rs 12,860 crore, up from Rs 12,000 crore achieved during the previous year. During the period April-September 2003, mobilisation of small savings touched Rs 6,187 crore.

According to him, the Postal Life Insurance business in the postal circle too has been faring well. The sum assured in this stood at Rs 69 crore in 2002-03. The targeted sum assured in the current fiscal has been pegged at Rs 110 crore.

The sum assured in Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI) business is expected to go up to Rs 200 crore in 2003-04 from Rs 77.7 crore in 2002-03. RPLI has been popularised by way of melas that have been organised in gram panchayats across the State.
