IPR Rs 120 cr set aside to update patent offices Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Oct. 15 THE Union Government has earmarked Rs 120 crore for upgradation of infrastructure and integration of the National Patent offices across the country and give them a corporate look, according to Mr Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. In his inaugural address at the five-day `Technology Summit and Technology Platform on Innovation and IPR' here, he said, "A massive computerisation is going to digitise the records." "So far about one lakh patent documents have been digitised. We have lined up recruitment of 271 examiners. We have already appointed 100 of them." While pointing out that there are huge opportunities in generic drugs, contract manufacturing, he said efforts should be made to translate these opportunities into business avenues. He said a well-framed IP regime will lead to secure and conducive environment for investments. Dr K Kasturirangan, space scientist and Member of Rajya Sabha, called for protection of the vast treasure trove of traditional knowledge by digitising documents and public-private and industry-academic collaborations. He said intellectual property framework should protect ethnic products, ensure food security and take care of traditional knowledge. There was a need for more private investments in research and development. Alluding to the strides made by the Indian space programme, Dr Kasturirangan till recently the Director of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said the country had to develop its own programme starting from the scratch. "The initiative demanded highest standards of technology, quality and team work," he said. Stating that the country has made significant progress in the fields of pharma and information technology, he said Indian capabilities for innovation had been established.
