Genome, Shasun in bioinformatics deal

Sanjiv Shankaran

Chennai , Oct. 15

THE US-based Genome Technologies has entered into a bioinformatics deal with Shasun Chemicals and Drugs on the heels of cost advantages offered by India.

Genome and Shasun would establish a new company in India to carry out bioinformatics work. Shasun, which would hold a 26 per cent stake in the company, is expected to invest more than Rs 10 crore in the project. Genome's equity would come in the form of technology that would be transferred to the venture.

Genome's technology would be used in gene sequencing work, said Mr S. Abhaya Kumar, Joint Managing Director, Shasun. Its essence would be to identify genes related to specific diseases in a manner existing technology could not, he added.

Mr Kumar explained that Genome's technology could be loosely divided into two parts. About 80 per cent relates to software used in bioinformatics work. The remaining relates to subsequent data analysis. He said that both parts are "unique".
