Telecommunications Cell operators flay ABTO petition in SC Our Bureau
New Delhi , Oct. 15 THE cellular operators on Wednesday criticised the appeal filed by the basic operators in the Supreme Court seeking direction on the ruling of the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Authority (TDSAT) and said that the move may prove to be a setback to the reconciliatory efforts being made by the Group of Ministers on Telecom. In a press statement here, the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI) has said: "This latest legal pursuit by the ABTO (Association of Basic Telecom Operators) seriously vitiates any chance of a settlement and strikes at the environment of credibility and trust, which is critical for an out-of-court settlement. The filing of the ABTO may also have major overtones on the reconciliatory efforts being made by the GoM." The COAI termed ABTO's move as "a refusal to accept the TDSAT direction." "Thus far, WLL(M) (Wireless in Local Loop) operators have refused to comply with the TDSAT judgment and continue to violate the SDCA (Short Distance Charging Area) limitation. They have used compliance with their licence as an excuse. Now, the appeal by the ABTO in the Supreme Court makes it clear that they are steadfast in resisting payment of appropriate fees for providing limited mobility as directed by the TDSAT," the statement alleged.
