Water Assurance to Chittoor farmers Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Water Resources Minister, Mr T.M. Jacob, has said necessary arrangements would be made to ensure that the State gets its share of water as per the terms of the inter-State Parambikkulam-Aliyar agreement. The Minister told assembled representatives of political parties and farmers from the water-scarce Chittoor command area in Palakkad district that the Tamil Nadu Government had agreed to make available enough supplies for irrigating the second paddy crop in the area. This water will be sourced from the Manakkadavu Weir, the Minister said. The State was entitled to receive 7,250 million cubic feet (mcft) during the course of the 2002-03 "Water Year" as per the Parambikkulam-Aliyar agreement, but it had to make do with 6,245 mcft. During the four-month period from May this year to August-end, the State had demanded 2,350 cmft for the first crop of paddy, but received only 316 cmft. Later, in September, it managed to get 864 mcft out of the 950 mcft it had requested for. This water had been made available for the first crop, while talks on the required supplies for the second crop were on, the Minister said.
