CEPC welcomes Ordinance

Our Bureau

KOCHI: The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPC) here has welcomed the Government's decision to promulgate an Ordinance exempting cashew farms from land ceiling under the Land Reforms Act.

Mr P. Bharathan Pillai, Chairman, CEPC, said that the cashew industry in the State had been demanding exemption of cashew plantations from the purview of land ceiling laws and for according plantation status to cashew for the past 40 years, as it would boost production of raw cashewnuts within the State and reduce dependence on imports.

Kerala, which was number one among the cashew-producing States till a few years ago, lost that position and the production here is hardly 20 per cent of the requirement of the processing units in the State. The cashew industry, he said, urges the Government to expedite the ordinance amending the Kerala Land Reforms Act.
