OBLIVIOUS OF RAIN AND SHINE: Fishermen go about their daily routine on Shankumughom beach in Thiruvananthapuram even as the north-east monsoon was declared as having set in over the State on Sunday. - C. Ratheesh Kumar

Thiruvananthapuram , Oct. 19

THE Met Office has declared the north-east monsoon as having set in over the peninsular States of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, a day ahead of schedule.

Widespread rain has been reported in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh while the season has had an uncharacteristically muted inaugural session in Kerala where rain activity was much less pronounced.

According to the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram, rains will pick up in intensity with associated thunder activity over the next 48 hours.

The weather bulletin issued on Sunday by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the low-pressure area over Southwest and adjoining West Central Bay of Bengal off the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast persisted.

Associated upper air cyclonic circulation extended up to mid-tropospheric level. During the last 24 hours, moderate to heavy rainfall was reported from many places in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, Kerala and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Chief amounts of rainfall (in cm) were Nagapattinam-8, Tiruchirappally and Pamban-7 each, Attiramapattanam-6 and Pondicherry-5.

In its forecast valid till Monday, the IMD said rain or thundershowers were possible in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and at a few places in Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala. It will be isolated in Telengana and Lakshadweep.

Isolated heavy rainfall has been forecast over Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry and Coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The mean date of onset for the north-east monsoon is October 20, which means the 2003 season has begun ahead of schedule. Earlier last week, the preceding southwest monsoon was declared having withdrawn from the country on October 15.

However, during the last year (2002 season), the date of withdrawal of the southwest monsoon and the onset of the north-east monsoon were simultaneously declared on October 25.
