Abu Dhabi , Oct. 19

INDIA and the UAE have initiated talks to collaborate in a number of fields including using solar energy for desalination and establishing a Cyber University, while UAE investment in Indian infrastructure projects like the inter-linking of rivers was also discussed at meetings held by Indian President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, with UAE officials and educationists.

Mr Arun Shourie, Indian Minister for Disinvestment, Communications and IT, who is part of the President's delegation, told a press conference here on Sunday that during discussions held by President Kalam with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a specific area for collaboration that was mooted was the use of solar energy for desalination.

President Kalam had also in his address to UAE national students at the Higher Colleges of Technology, mooted the idea of a collaborative Cyber University with sites to be set up in both countries. The idea was proposed by the Ministry of Information and Technology and a small core group will be set up to work on this collaboration, Mr Shourie said.

UAE investment in infrastructure, particularly in mega projects like the inter-linking of rivers was discussed.

Other areas for collaboration were in the field of chemicals, petro-chemicals and pharmaceuticals and contract research in these fields, he said.
