Small tea growers' associations to form federation

Deeptha Rajkumar

Wellington (Nilgiris) , Oct. 20

SMALL tea growers associations across the country are coming together to form a `federation' to create a common platform to represent their issues.

Mr M. Bhojarajan, President, Nilgiris Small Growers Association, said that despite repeated appeals and representations to the Government, very little has been done so far to alleviate the plight of the small growers in the country.

"At this juncture we felt the need for an adequate and stronger platform to be able to represent our issues, grievances, more strongly. The federation would be in a position not only to take up common issues such as price sharing etc, but it would also be able to highlight/represent problems of say any one specific region,'' Mr Bhojarajan told Business Line.

According to him, an in-principle agreement had been reached with the small growers association of Assam, North Bengal, Nilgiris, Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Consent was awaited from the small growers of Kerala.

"We propose to have one final meeting next month in Kolkata before the federation is up and running,'' he added.
