Rlys earnings from revenue freight up in first half

THE Railways earned Rs 13,159.82 crore from the movement of 266.43 million tonnes of revenue freight traffic during the first half of the current fiscal.

Compared to the earnings of Rs 12,932.99 crore during the same period in the previous fiscal, this works out to an increase of 1.75 per cent.

Of the total earnings during the six months, the largest contribution of Rs 5,615.97 crore came from the transportation of 120.60 million tonnes of coal.

The next highest earnings of Rs 1,603.55 crore was netted by the movement of 22.98 million tonnes of foodgrains.

While the transportation of 15.62 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricants fetched Rs 1,194.38 crore, the movement of 23.61 million tonnes of cement accounted for Rs 1,053.50 crore.

Among other items, the transportation of 21.14 million tonnes of raw materials to steel plants fetched the Railways Rs 568.65 crore, while the movement of 6.74 million tonnes of finished iron and steel from the steel plants accounted for Rs 651.43 crore.

Besides, the transportation of 10.34 million tonnes of iron ore for exports fetched Rs 391.49 crore more.

The transportation of 12.44 million tonnes of fertilisers translated into an earning of Rs 562.60 crore for the Railways, while the movement of other miscellaneous goods accounted for a substantial amount of Rs 1,538.25 crore, according to an official release.
