HANDHELD device maker, Palm Inc, will launch seven new models of handheld computing devices in the country soon and is planning to retail these products at shopping malls across the country.

The Palm Solutions Group Chief Evangelist, Mr Paul D. Leeper, told Business Line that there was a huge market for these products in the country. p

"We are looking at various options for selling them at various places," Mr Leeper said.

He said the company's sole distributor in the country, Tech Pacific, was in talks with shopping malls such as Food World and Music World to retail these handhelds.

Mr Leeper said there were at least 5,000 registered developers in the country working on Palm operating system. The new handhelds, which will be launched in the country soon are Zire21 priced at Rs 7,500, Tungsten E (Rs 14,900), Tungsten T2 (Rs 24,500), Tungsten T3 (Rs 29,900), Tungsten W (Rs 31,500) and Tungsten C (Rs 37,500).

The costliest handheld, Tungsten C has built in Wi-Fi and has 52 storage capacity. It handles Word, Excel and Powerpoint compatible files. It has a built in keyboard, a five way navigator button and expansion capabilities. It weighs 179 gms.

Mr Leeper said though TechPacific has been appointed the Indian distributor, it was important to sell it at shopping malls and other retail outlets to popularise the product. Hence talks were on with retail chains such as Food World and Planet M to distribute these products.

These devices have add ons such as MP3 audio kit which are compatible with Zire 71, Tungsten E and T series. The kit enables people to play music from CDs or MP3 using the 64 MB expansion card, stereo headphones and RealOne Player software.
