Telecommunications Tata Tele signs $150-m deal with Ericsson Our Bureau
Mumbai , Oct. 20 TATA Teleservices Ltd has signed a contract worth approximately $150 million (Rs 700 crore) with Swedish telecom equipment manufacturer Ericsson for CDMA2000 1X wireless infrastructure for the Tata Indicom mobility services. An announcement by Ericsson on its Web site said the contract includes deployment of Ericsson's end-to-end CDMA2000 1X network solution in TTSL's Tamil Nadu and Karnataka circles. In addition, Ericsson will provide core network equipment in other TTSL circles. These circles are Delhi, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Goa (the last two serviced by subsidiary, Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) Ltd). Deployment will begin immediately and the network is expected to be put into service in Q1 2004, said the announcement. A Tata Teleservices group official said the successful reception to Tata Indicom's limited mobility service has led to demand for infrastructure from all the company's circles. "We are therefore expanding our network infrastructure." India offers one of the largest wireless opportunities in the world, said the announcement from Ericsson, quoting Mr Ake Persson, President of Ericsson Mobile Systems CDMA. Tata Teleservices, which under the brand name of Tata Indicom, offers fixed wireline, fixed wireless and limited mobility services, has a customer base of over one million.
