Pricing policy for sugarcane

This is with reference to the editorial "Sweetener for cane growers" (Business Line, October 24). It is unfortunate that the politicians see the sugarcane pricing policy as a "populist measure" to capture vote banks rather than an economic process which requires rational decisions.

It is high time the policy of partial decontrol, which was formulated with the objective of allowing sugar mills limited freedom to compete with alternative users of sugarcane — that is, gur and khandsari producers — in the matter of payment of sugarcane prices is restored.

Moreover, to enable the sugar mills to recover the extra cost involved in the payment of higher cane price, the Government should permit them to sell a smaller portion of their production as free sale sugar in the open market.

Until and unless the "political bosses" take rational economic decisions on sugarcane pricing, sugar will continue to be sold at a loss both domestically and internationally. This will eventually result in the demise of the sugar industry in India.
