TN plantation workers unite

Coimbatore , Oct. 26

PLANTATION workers in the State have decided to come under a common banner - `The Tamil Nadu State Tea Plantation Workers Federation'- which would henceforth take collective action on matters concerning the plantation workers.

A joint declaration to this effect was made by the tea industry trade unions last week. ``We believe that the unity of the plantation workers is necessary in this hour of sustained reduction in the auction price of tea, the increase in consolidation of control of the tea trans-national corporations and its price determination and on the increasing attacks on the statutory rights of the workers,'' the Secretary of the Valaparai Trade Union Federation, Mr S. Manickam, said.

He said that the trade unions had decided to forge alliances with the organisations of the small tea growers, considering the fact that they were experiencing deterioration in their living standard due to un-remunerative prices and the decrease in control over tea.
