Wellington , Oct. 26

NILGIRIS has the potential to be converted into a fully organic farming district, Mr C. Ramasamy, Vice-Chancellor, Coimbatore Agricultural University said.

Addressing a seminar on Organic Farming in the Nilgiris, Mr Ramasamy said that currently the global market for organic products is around $20 billion, which is expected to touch $30 billion over the next five years. "The demand for organic farming products is on the increase worldwide and farmers should look at changing their farming practices,'' he said.

The Vice-Chancellor said that in a bid to develop this sector, the Central Government has mooted a Rs 100 crore national programme for organic products.

He called on the farmers to form associations to get effective help from the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU). The Chancellor said that a similar concept adopted in countries like the US and Canada has reportedly met with positive results.

According to him, TNAU has submitted a Rs 67 lakh proposal to Hill Area Development Programme (HADP) for development of Horticulture in the region. The seminar was organised by TNAU in collaboration with HADP, Department of Horticulture and APEDA.
