Combo drives fast gaining favour

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad , Oct. 26

THERE has been a perceptible shift towards Combo drives that enrich people's infotainment capabilities in the emerging convergence era.

From 10 to 12 per cent penetration now, it is expected to go up to about 30 to 35 per cent by next year, according to Mr Sonal Anand, Head, Samsung India Electronics, IT and Telecom Division.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr Anand said the convergence era had opened up new vistas for entertainment, which called for use of newer integrated devices to enjoy the benefits.

"For about a year, the DVD growth was relatively stagnant. Lately, we are witnessing significant traction in the DVD marketplace.

Typically, a decent DVD player currently costs about Rs 7,000 and this needs a good system to enjoy its benefits to the full.

On the other hand, a Combo Drive is offered at about Rs 4,000 and comes with a DVD player and CD writer that provide a whole range of options for the youth," he explained.

"This is particularly a major hit with youth, i.e. the 18 - 32 year age group. They want a combination of all of this in one player and are gradually opting for such drives. Most of the new PCs that will be sold henceforth will feature such drives," Mr Anand said.

This is the Internet, gaming and entertainment era where a PC has increasingly become the core for this multimedia era.

The PC user today wants more and more from the computer- whether it be data transaction or using the PC as audio and video equipment.

In a research survey carried out, 90 per cent of the users said that they faced problem carrying data in floppy and would prefer to use a CD instead.

About 75 per cent said that they had a CD ROM drive and were handicapped as they were unable to `record' data.

On the other hand, about 65 per cent felt that they would like to `burn' their own music and create their own personal picture albums.
