`Chip industry in Asia-Pacific to grow 18.5 pc'

New Delhi , Oct. 26

SEMICONDUCTOR industry in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow by 18.5 per cent to $68.2 billion in 2003, fuelled by strong growth in China and South Korea, according to Gartner Dataquest, a technology market research firm.

By 2007, the semiconductor market in the region would reach $116.6 billion from $57.6 billion in 2002, Gartner Dataquest said in a statement here on Thursday.

"Despite semiconductor vendors having some problems doing business in China/Hong Kong in second quarter of the year due to SARS, many have already seen a full recovery," said Ms Dorothy Lai, Principal Analyst at Gartner Dataquest.

The continuously growing outsourcing trend in electronic equipment manufacturing and major global electronic equipment manufacturers' shifting of production to the Asia-Pacific for cost competitiveness are expected to drive further growth in the semiconductor industry in the region.
