`Attrition not a major concern for telecom firms'

Anjali Prayag

Bangalore , Oct. 26

THOUGH competition is hotting up in the telecom sector, attrition is not a big concern, says Ms Shampa Kochhar, Vice-President, Customer Care and Human Resources, Spice Telecom, Bangalore. Exits in the industry happen in spurts, i.e., when a new operator comes to town. "But there are no industry figures as we are at a fairly nascent stage," she clarifies.

Spice Telecom, which currently has about 300 employees, has taken the campus recruitment route for its technical staff. "During our first year of operation, the IT sector was witnessing a recession and this helped us get a good pick from the campus," according to Ms Kochhar.

The company has not opted for outsourced talent as "we have only job for one profile, unlike IT companies where there are 30 people doing one job." Spice, however, has partly outsourced its call centre jobs.

Talking about Spice's HR initiatives, Ms Kochhar says whenever there's a vacancy in the company, it prefers to have "home-grown" people fill the gap, rather than look for talent outside. "This is because they already have the product knowledge," she says. As a result, several employees from the call centre have moved to other functions within the company.

To enable employees enrich their knowledge, Spice has kicked off a `Learning Centre' which stocks books, periodicals and CDs on various subjects. Initially the company had to push its employees really hard to use the facility. "We had to do some internal marketing programmes like book review contests, lending out books, etc., and now it's attracting a good response," says the HR chief.

Other attempts at making the HR function transparent have been through the launch of the employee portal where a lot of information is available upfront and the employee help desk to address their concerns.
