Hyderabad , Oct. 26

THE Union Ministry for Urban Development has ordered the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to conduct a survey on the proposed Hyderabad Metro Rail Project, involving an investment of Rs 4,000 crore. The Ministry, in principle, has agreed to the proposed project.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Sunday, the Union Minister of State for Urban Development, Mr B. Dattatreya, said the Andhra Pradesh Government had released Rs 1.5 crore and the Central Government had sanctioned Rs 1 crore for conducting the survey.

Once the work is launched, the project will be completed in a span of seven years. The Union Government is likely to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the State Government in this regard shortly.

The Minister said that already a few corridors had been identified in the State capital for the launch of the project. These included Osmania Medical College - Dilsukhnagar and Secunderabad - Charminar - Falaknuma. The State Government had suggested another corridor, Hitech City - Tolichowki - Nampally, to be included in the project.

He said that the State and the Central Governments would contribute 15 per cent each towards the total cost of the project. For the remaining amount, options like going for market borrowings and taking up the project as a public-private partnership venture were being worked out.

A meeting of all the officials and policy makers concerning the project would be convened in a week's time which would be up by signing of the MoU.

The Minister said the Centre had recently sanctioned Rs 300-crore loan assistance for taking up urban infrastructure development schemes funded by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation.

Funds would be released within a fortnight for the schemes being implemented in 113 towns of the State. His Ministry would also convene a meeting of the State and Central Government officials to review the progress of the ongoing works and resolve the issues, if any.
