Madurai , Oct. 26

THE introduction of the high power, modern diesel locomotive (WDP4) will immensely benefit the passenger-intensive Chennai Egmore-Nagercoil section, once it is commissioned, according to Mr Ashok Kumar Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), here.

Addressing presspersons, the DRM said, with the arrival of this environmental-friendly locomotive, the super fast trains hauling 23 coaches could attain optimum speed levels. The engine can attain a speed up to 160 km per hour and can run continuously for 90 days.

The Railways has imported 20 locomotives from the US-based General Motors with 10 for passenger trains and 10 for goods trains. This is the first time the Southern Railway is operating this loco in the busy Chennai Egmore-Madurai sector, he added.

Explaining the features of the locomotive, the Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer, Mr V.V.S. Srinivas, said that it is fitted with advanced technologies such as radar, for speed sensing as well as creep control and effective anti-skid.

The on-board computer also controls the brake system. The self-diagnostic facility provided by the computer will give continuous information to the driver and the maintenance personnel to know the condition of the locomotive.
