New Delhi , Oct. 27

THE Union Communication Minister, Mr Arun Shourie, has welcomed the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on unified licensing, saying that the telecom market was big for everyone to benefit.

"Everyone will benefit. I hope everybody will co-operate and see that after all it is such a big market and we can all take advantage of this," he said on the sidelines of a video conference with the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on the occasion of the launch of mobile services in Nagaland.

Mr Shourie added that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) would give its response to the to the Group of Ministers (GoM) on telecom which is scheduled to hold its final meeting on October 30.

As to whether the TRAI roadmap would end the spate of litigations, he said that it would depend on the operators. "If everybody is going to block every move, things will continue the way they are."

On TRAI's proposal to impose penalty on Reliance Infocomm for offering `cellular type' services, the Minister said it would not be difficult for the DoT to implement the recommendation but a final decision in this regard would be taken by the GoM headed by the Finance Minister, Mr Jaswant Singh.

Reliance Infocomm welcomed the recommendations of the TRAI to "end the licence raj" in the telecom sector.
