Pepper exports down 24 pc

PEPPER exports from the country during the first nine months of the calendar year 2003 decreased by 24 per cent to 12,800 tonnes from 16,950 tonnes during the same period of 2002, according to Jakarta-based International Pepper Community (IPC).

However, exports in September increased by 400 tonnes at 1,400 tonnes compared with September 2002, according to the International Pepper Council (IPC).

During the review period, exports of pepper (black and white) from all major exporting countries except Sri Lanka decreased. About 1,43,650 tonnes have been shipped by Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. This quantity was less by 10 per cent compared to same period last year at around 1,59,000 tonnes, according to latest data compiled by IPC.

During September, exports of pepper from these countries also declined. The six main producing countries together exported around 17,233 tonnes in September 2003 against 20,728 tonnes in September 2002.

Exports from Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka decreased, while that from India and Indonesia increased.

During the review period, Lankan pepper exports totalled 6,854 tonnes, registering an increase of 26 per cent compared to 5,422 tonnes during same period in previous year.

Indonesia was the largest pepper exporter in September 2003 shipping around 6,012 tonnes (35 per cent of the total export of the six major exporting countries), comprising 3,599 tonnes of black valued at $5 million and 2,413 tonnes of white valued at $5.6 million.
