The Hindu Business Line : Interim chief for Kerala SHRC

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court has provisionally appointed Mr V. Ram Kumar, Law Secretary, who is also the most senior district judge in the State, as the third member of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC).

The court also directed him to function as Acting Chairman of the Commission. Mr Justice C.N. Ramachandran Nair directed Mr S. Balaraman, who had been appointed as Acting Chairman, to hand over the charge to the Law Secretary.

The interim order was passed on a writ petition filed by Mr T.K. Wilson, another member, challenging the appointment of Mr Balaraman as Acting Chairman, which came after Mr Justice Pareed Pillai's term as Chairman ended.

According to him, a person with judicial background should have been asked to discharge the function of the Chairman. Mr Balaraman had not worked as a judicial officer.
