Education CM demands IIT in Kerala Our Bureau
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Mr A.K. Antony, has requested the Centre that the State, which has been making consistent efforts to improve the quality of higher education, should be given preference while deciding on a new base for an IIT. The State Government has learnt about the Centre's veering down to the decision on upgrading existing technical institutes of excellence to IIT status, rather than go for new full-fledged IITs. Despite its high rank among States with the highest credentials in the field, Kerala does not still have a centre of higher learning of the class of an IIT or an IISc. In this context, Mr Antony said the Trivandrum Engineering College offered itself as a candidate for being upgraded to IIT status. At least seven departments in the college have been able to win national accreditation for themselves. Those passing out from the college have managed to get proper placements in the industry. These achievements made the college an eminent choice for upgradation to an IIT, the Chief Minister told the Union Minister for Human Resources Development, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, in a communication.
