Kolkata , Nov. 7

THE Union Health Secretary, Mr J.V.R. Prasada Rao, announced here on Friday that the Calcutta Medical College would get around Rs 120 crore from the Centre for upgradation of its facilities to make it a national centre for excellence in healthcare.

On the sidelines of the three-day healthcare conference, organised by the Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the State Government, Mr Rao told Business Line that the fund would be available early in the next fiscal.

Mr Rao also said that the Centre last week had set up a National Commission on Macro Economy and Health, which will go into the macro-economic resource management in medical care and suggest ways to improve healthcare.

The commission, comprising economists, physicians and administrators - is expected to submit its report within a year. "The commission will not have any representation from the States. However, it will seek state governments' views for an empirical study," he said.

The official felt the States should provide at least 7 per cent of their budgetary expenditures on healthcare. The current average for the States on this account was hovering around 5 per cent. The worrying factor was that the growing trend among the States is to allocate even less than 5 per cent, he added.

Dr Surjya Kanta Mishra, State Health Minister, said that West Bengal was in the process of introducing a regulatory mechanism for the healthcare sector.
