Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Minister for Tourism and Fisheries, Prof K.V. Thomas, has said that administrative sanction has been granted for a Rs 1.5-crore scheme for revamping the canals criss-crossing the Alappuzha town.

The scheme is aimed at restoring the flows through the canals, which now present the pitiable sight of dumped urban wastes and overgrown waterweeds providing a favourite breeding ground for mosquitoes and hindering boat or country craft movement of any kind.

The project is to be carried out under the auspices of the Department of Tourism, the detailed report for which has been prepared by the Department of Water Resources, the Minister said. The Irrigation Division, Alappuzha, will implement the project.
