Hyderabad , Nov. 7

THE Andhra Pradesh Government has decided to entrust the subjects of small-scale, khadi, village and cottage industries to the local bodies.

The services of the General Manager of the District Industries Centre and his staff would be placed at the disposal of the Zilla Parishad. It had also decided to transfer the subjects of technical education including that of Industrial Training Institutes to the Panchayatraj institutions in the State.

At a review meeting with his Cabinet colleagues and top functionaries of the Government, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, had directed the officials to take immediate and effective steps to transfer funds, functions and functionaries to the local bodies as per the letter and spirit of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.

He also directed the Cabinet Sub-Committee on devolution of powers to hold discussions with civil society organisations that were championing the cause of local bodies and take their advice.

He wanted building of adequate safeguards to check corruption and establish accountability in the discharge of responsibilities being devolved upon local bodies.

The meeting had also decided to transfer various other fields of activity to the local bodies. These included primary and secondary education, agriculture and its extension activities, animal husbandry and fisheries, land improvement, implementation of land reforms, and subjects relating to social forestry, farm forestry, fuel and fodder.
