Buddhadeb deplores `gross abuse of legislative privilege'

Kolkata , Nov. 9

THE action of the Tamil Nadu Assembly of sentencing senior journalists of The Hindu and the editor of Murasoli to jail last Friday as a "gross abuse of legislative privilege" was strongly condemned by the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

In a statement here on Sunday, Mr Bhattacharjee said, "In a democracy the role of the media should not be curbed. All governments and political parties need to protect the freedom of the press and maintain the dignity of legislative bodies." "The harassment caused in Bangalore yesterday to Mr N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu group of newspapers, is deplorable," he said.

He stated, "I appeal to Ms J. Jayalalitha, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, to use her good offices so that the verdict of the Tamil Nadu Assembly is revoked in the interest of democracy in India."
